It’s time to start your journey into the world of golf. Embarking on this journey can be both exciting and challenging, especially for those who are new to the sport. One key factor that can significantly enhance the learning experience is choosing the right golf coach. Investing in quality golf lessons tailored to your needs can make the process more enjoyable and rewarding. In this article, we’ll explore what women new to golf should think about when selecting a golf coach and getting golf lessons. You will also find a list of places you can explore and reach out to for golf lessons in the Philadelphia & South Jersey area. Let’s dive into what to know before starting your lessons.

1. Golf Clinics vs. One-on-One Lessons

When you are searching for golf lessons, you may see the name “clinics” on their website. Golf clinics are group lessons usually done with one coach. This is a great way to be taught a concept with other golfers who desire to learn the same thing. Group clinics cost less than a one-on-one lesson because the coach is working with an entire group versus giving you all of their attention. Group clinics can be a very effective and affordable way to learn golf on a budget.

2. Have Realistic Expectations & Practice What You Learn

It is very important to understand that if you’re new or getting back to the sport of golf (remember that it’s a sport), it’s going to take time for things to click. It can be very easy to get frustrated and it will take weeks and practice for it all to fall in place. Realize that it’s not a race. You also must practice what you learn from your coach. At the end of your lesson, be sure to have homework from your coach to practice until your next lesson. Don’t be ashamed of fearful of what others will think if you’re practicing in public at a driving range or golf facility. No one started off as an expert. Trust the process and realize that it’s only up from here!

3. Finding A Great Coach is Like Finding A Great Doctor or Therapist

If you aren’t clicking with the first coach you work with, you don’t have to stay stuck with them. There are multiple golf training facilities and places that offer lessons. Keep rotating until you find someone you click with. At the same time, realize that a coach is just that, a coach. They aren’t a genie that can make you instantly an overnight success. They provide you with the expertise, strategies, and process to learn the game. It’s up to you to apply, practice, and keep up consistency. One of the biggest lessons you will learn in golf is that what you do not practice, you will lose. We will also provide some great places to practice.

4. Set A Monthly Budget for Lessons & Practice

Golf is not the cheapest sport to play. However, there are ways to make it affordable for your budget. There are two levels of golf coaching. When you invest with a coach, look for someone who has completed recognized coaching programs or has affiliations with reputable golf associations. It’s important to know that the more established they are in their coaching career, the price tag will usually match.

Golf lessons with a PGA Coach (Professional Golf Association) or LPGA Coach (Ladies Professional Golf Association) will range between $100 to $150 per lesson which can range between 45-Minutes to One-Hour depending on the coach. You can also find coaches that may not have PGA or LPGA certifications but have had years of verified experience and other certifications through golf associations that will cost between $50 to $100 per lesson.

Coaches and golf facilities also provide programs that are focused on providing a success plan. Coaching programs are usually higher in cost but are focused on making sure that you receive a certain number of lessons so that you can have a certain result after working with that coach.Make sure you visit the golf lesson website for verified reviews and information regarding their experience. You may also want to account for gas and travel costs to get to and from your lessons depending on your form of transportation.

5. Practice Begins at the Range & Putting Green

You will find that after a lesson, you need a place to practice and depending on where you live, your house is not an ideal location to swing a golf club (in or outside the house). That’s where the driving range and the putting green will come into the picture.

Driving Ranges are golf practice facilities where they charge you for a bucket of golf balls (usually comes in different sizes) and you can find a spot to place your golf bag and practice your swing and making contact with your ball. The best driving ranges also have a practice putting green where you can practice using your putter as well as your short game with your wedges. If you ever desire to make practice a serious part of your game, you can even look into investing long term as a member of a golf club (public, semi-private, or private) where the driving range and practice facilities are included in your golf membership.

During the winter months, it’s best to practice indoors at an indoor facility. You will find several of the coaching locations listed at the bottom of this article provide indoor practice areas.

6. What to Bring & Wear to Your Golf Lessons

We recommend purchasing a starter set of golf clubs from Amazon, Dick’s or Golf Galaxy for less than $250. It should be a starter set that includes a golf bag and an entire set of golf clubs. We’ve included some links immediately below to help you with your search. Make sure you check to make sure the golf clubs are made for a RIGHT-hand or LEFT-handed player. If you are left-handed (writing hand), you want to make sure to search for LEFT handed clubs (very important). Most golf clubs are made for right-handed players so double check before hitting the purchase button.
