Join us as we honor the legacy of black women in golf and amplify their stories for all to hear.

Today our focus is Maggie Hathaway. Maggie Hathaway, a multi-talented activist, blues singer, actress, sports writer, and golfer, left an indelible legacy in the world of golf. Notably, Los Angeles honored her by naming a public golf course after her, the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course, recognizing her unwavering commitment to making golf accessible for people of color. Maggie’s impact extended beyond her own achievements on the course; she became a fierce advocate against discrimination in golf, actively challenging the exclusion of Black golfers from tournaments and picketing PGA events to promote access and inclusion.

Maggie Hathaway’s journey into golf began in 1955 when she, despite never having played the sport before, was appalled by the discrimination faced by people of color on golf courses. Witnessing heavyweight boxer Joe Louis participating in a pro-am at a segregated golf course while “truly excellent Black golfers” were barred from professional golf, she confronted Joe Louis and, astonishingly, hit the green with her first-ever golf shot, earning a set of golf clubs from the world champion.

In addition to her activism, Maggie Hathaway also became a golf article writer, penning columns for publications such as the California Eagle and the Los Angeles Sentinel. Her articles shed light on the struggles and accomplishments of Black professional golfers, while also advocating for the inclusion of Black golfers in prestigious tournaments. Maggie Hathaway’s legacy lives on, exemplifying the power of determination and advocacy to break down barriers and open doors for underrepresented communities in golf and beyond.
