On Monday, October 13, 2025, a group of 18 members from The Green’s Ladies Golf Club, Inc., including our president Dr. Ronnie Florence-McPherson, had the honor of attending An Evening with Shonda Rhimes in Philadelphia. The event marked the launch of the 10th Anniversary Edition of Year of Yes and an unforgettable moment for our club, as we were invited backstage to meet Shonda in person.
Our connection to this moment was meaningful. Shonda has recently stepped into the world of golf, a space that defines so much of our club’s purpose and passion.
Shonda’s Yes to Golf: A Meaningful Move
When Shonda Rhimes said yes to becoming part-owner of the Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC), she wasn’t just entering a sport. She was stepping into a space where more women, more stories, and more diverse voices are needed. Her decision speaks volumes about where golf is going and who belongs in it.
Her presence in the sport reflects what we already know and believe: that golf is evolving, and women like Shonda and like us are helping shape its future.
What We’re Taking Away from Year of Yes 10 Years Later
The newly released edition of Year of Yes includes new chapters that reflect on how Shonda’s life has changed in the past decade. Her reflections are thoughtful and vulnerable, touching on many of the same themes we talk about within our own community: identity, joy, reinvention, and courage.
Here are a few of the lessons that resonated most with our members.
1. Growth is not a straight line.
Shonda shares how relocating, slowing down, and facing the unfamiliar helped her reconnect with herself. This reminder that change can be uncomfortable and still deeply necessary echoes the growth we often feel on and off the course.
2. You don’t have to be fearless to begin.
Throughout the book, Shonda emphasizes that bravery does not require fearlessness. It just requires movement. Whether it is writing a show, taking a leap professionally, or trying something as vulnerable as a new sport, she reminds us that taking the first step matters most.
3. Joy is a choice.
One of the strongest messages in this new edition is about the importance of making room for joy. For our club, joy shows up in early tee times, laughter between holes, encouraging a first-time player, and sharing the game with others. Shonda’s words remind us that joy is something we can actively choose and protect.
4. It is never too late to say “yes”.
Shonda’s journey into golf is a reflection of something we live out every week. You are never too late, too inexperienced, or too established to try something new. Her yes to golf is a celebration of learning, exploration, and the freedom to evolve.
A Shared Yes
Meeting Shonda backstage was a full-circle moment for The Green’s Ladies. We spoke about what golf has meant to our lives and how community through sport has shaped our confidence. She listened with warmth and grace, and the connection was instant.
Her yes to golf is more than just a headline. It is a gesture of expansion. It signals that women’s stories belong in every space, and we are proud to share part of that journey with her.
Year of Yes: 10th Anniversary Edition is available now in bookstores and online. Let it inspire you to reflect, to grow, and to say yes to something new.
